Who cares About Cohen's Book, Let's Talk Obama

Affirmative Action Obvious as Obama Heads Towards Primaries

Former Secretary of Defense William Cohen and his wife Janet Langhart Cohen recently released a book, Love in Black and White. They came on the show to discuss their experiences as a mixed race couple throughout their 11 year marriage.

The most interesting comments during their segment were unrelated to their book but focused on their opinions of Barack Obama.

When asked if they thought America was ready for a Black president (which I thought we already had, embodied in Clinton the First), they said yes. After living their lives, anything is possible. America is ready.

The presumption of the question: If Obama is the democratic candidate and loses, it will reflect the inability of America to accept a Black person as president. The real issue in an Obama loss would have nothing to do with race.

The junior senator from Illinois has a mediocre resume with minimal executive experience. If he were a White guy with the same resume, he would be laughed out of the race.

On the other hand, an Obama win would demonstrate America’s willingness to elect a person, lacking in competence and experience, BECAUSE he is Black. An Obama win would be the most extreme example of affirmative action ever seen in this country.

Obama’s candidacy smacks not of the daring and braveness audacity may indicate but rather of its most negative qualities: overconfidence and impudence.
