Rosie and Joy then go on to talk about Giuliani, who still leads the pack for the Republicans.
While they have plenty of things they could discuss to show their disagreement with him (although, of all the candidates, you’d think they’d like him the best) they instead choose to misstate facts and encourage misunderstandings.
Joy acts like she doesn’t want to talk about the specifics of his personal life- she doesn’t want to trash him. This is said sincerely because we know how careful she is, in general, about commenting on people’s personal lives.
***
Rosie: Don’t trash, tell the facts. This is his third marriage. His first marriage was to his first cousin, or something.
Joy: Yes (audience titters)
Rosie: True
***
Not True: His first wife was his second cousin. Why would they want to send the message out that he married his first cousin? Because it is generally illegal and most of the world thinks it is wrong.
They go on to discuss Giuliani’s second marriage and how he completely shocked his second wife by making a public announcement that he planned to divorce her.
Be clear, all reports were that they were leading separate lives. She was completely aware that they were moving in different directions. She admitted they had had problems for years. I am not a big fan of divorce but recognize I am in the minority on this one.
Rosie and Joy should at least be honest about these facts because their stretching the truth and ignoring facts calls their entire commentary into question.
Sadly, Elisabeth tried to compare Giuliani’s personal life to Reagan being divorced. Reagan divorced his first wife decades before he ran for President. He had been happily married to Nancy Reagan for over 25 years when he ran for President. There really is NO comparison between the marital lives of these two men.
That being said, lets all try to focus on policy positions.
